notes & things | 10/11/2026

Occasionally, fall in Chicago delivers some beautiful days where the temps feel like mild summer and the nights get cozy and chilly. While it was colder out in Rockford, we returned yesterday to mild lakeside breezes, which meant people still walking about and enjoying the things that will be ending soon, like beach hanging and riverwalk dining. The patio outside along the water was packed at karaoke last night, where I tagged along after we got back. While the bar cleared out after a ball game, there were still enough performers to keep things rolling til 2am and I got to do a couple decent renditions of Tom Petty and Blondie songs.

The weekend also brought another mini-retreat, though my charger on the fritz so I spent the day writing notes and outlines for the play that I started earlier in `the summer and never finished about teenage girls and demonology, which seems fitting since we are mid-stream of the new Mike Flanagan Carrie, which is about the rage of young girls, and more broadly, women in general, which is spiking more and more as the country degenerates. So much good horror stuff is coming in the next couple of months on both small and big screen (as well as the stage locally that we are hoping to get to.) the Crystal Lake series. The new season of Yellowjackets. Films like Other Mommy and Victorian Psycho as well.

I am finishing up the galleys of the eco-gothic anthology this week, and once approved by the authors, we will be planning the release. I am also still in the thick of submissions for next year's book series, so if you have not heard from me, you will be soon. Since we only had a handful of full-length projects, we are starting a second reading period for those through the end of this year.

Fall feels like its slipping away, so I am hoping to inhabit the space of it a little bit more. Since we were out til 4am last night, after a big brunch of biscuits and gravy that J made this morning, I am mostly taking a lazy Sunday to plan the week and reset the apartment. Then tonight, the rest of Carrie and maybe another movie on streaming. We have tickets for a cool horror shorts screening tomorrow called Fresh Meat and maybe another to make it a double feature sicne we'll be out.
