Since yesterday was officially a wash on birthday celebration, due to poetry biz and weather, today, is shaping up to much better and will involve the requisite birthday dinner, cake, and perhaps some antique store shopping round the neighborhood. Our table at the CPL was actually pretty successful, we sold lots of books and gave away lots of info. I had to miss Rita Dove though, who I would have like to see, but all in all a good day. On the way home, though, I got caught in the most ridiculous thunderstorm that left me drenched and shivering in the clothes I'd chosen for the rather balmy morning. After that I crawled into bed to warm up and took a nap, then ordered thai food and watched Dollhouse on my laptop. Not terribly exciting, but I need a little bit of low key time...

things to see and read and do (oh my)

Julie Hunt over at the Publish Chicago blog was kind enough to interview me about the press and it's doings..check it out..

Sandra Beasley's "From Page to Pixels: The Evolution of Online Journals" in the new Poets & Writers..

Tomorrow at the Poetry Fest (see below), I will be manning (womanning?) a table in the main lobby of CPL and selling dgp titles. I will be there from 11-4 and will afterwards perhaps be celebrating my birthday here (I'll be too late to be a zombie, but will get to hang out with some)...

For the past four or five days I've found myself oddly, unusually happy and content for no good reason. I'm typically, in general a pretty happy person, but there are, of course, mood ups and downs (and always that pesky anxiety and control freakiness). Still, I was walking to the bus stop downtown Saturday evening, I suddenly realized that even though it had been a long day in the library and an early morning, even though I had just put a couple of hours of serious work in at the studio printing a couple big chap orders and fussing over soap labels, things which normally have me dragging and hating the world, I would not rather be anywhere else than exactly where I was, doing exactly what I am doing. Would not be be any other person than who I am, would not have changed anything in my life for some other things.

Even circumstances I don't have alot of control over, the dayjob doldrums, the continued on again / off again tawdry romantic crises with R, seem like just little and eventually rectifiable things given time. Perhaps it's just pre-birthday introspection, but I've been downright cheery and it's freaking me out a little. I'm a worrier by nature, by heredity, and I seem constantly to be worrying about just about everything, from general things like having enough money, to how clean my apartment is or isn't, to how far I am behind with the press schedule, to whether or not I am stuck in a rut with my writing. Saturday night, suddenly these seemed like very small and easily remedied things instead of the big deal I usually make them out to be. I guess I always feel like there is so much going on that I rarely take much pleasure in all the little things that have the power to make me happy--the big box of glorious vintage slips I unpacked and was anxious to get to dying, steak quesadillas from the all night Mexican place, taking goofy pictures of the cats, making and photographing little arty things, writing poems.

Maybe it's that whole living in the moment things rather than running around like a crazy person with a rabid to-do list to the next thing then the next and never reaching the end point, all the while just sort passing through things and people, and never really stopping to notice things or enjoy things for what they are. Maybe this is just one of those cliche "leaning to smell the roses" posts, and I'll probably be cranky and insufferable again by Friday, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. :)

Hand Painted Desk from Sandy562

I've been drooling over this desk for close to a year, and while I am no closer to actually owning it, I still like to stare at it sometimes...*sigh*

a couple of notes

* I will be visiting a class and reading tomorrow out in the wilds of Romeoville at Lewis University with the lovely Lina Ramona Vitkauskas. I'm psyched since last time I did a couple of years ago, I met some very promising poets who I later wound up publishing chapbooks by, so it will definitely be fun...Next week I will be reading at The Hopleaf as part of the Bookslut reading series. Since I've been a Bookslut freak for the last 7 years or so, this is very cool.

*this weekend's soap project was a luscious lemon verbena, which is my favorite thus far..I am hoping to have everything wrapped, photographed, and available in the shop by the end of the week. I also, in trying make my mom some earrings for her birthday, designed a couple of new pairs that are a bit more dangly. Otherwise, I was sleeping alot, hiding under blankets because my apartment is freezing, and watching horror movies that frightened the bejeezus out of me. I am so ready for spring I could scream, I got a ridiculous thrill on the bus over seeing a few boats returning to the harbors again in Lincoln Park. The tulips are getting pretty tall and will bloom within a week or so if the weather is fair. I can't wait...

april is the cruelest month, it really is..

I am considering throwing my hat in the ring for Napowrimo (Natrional Poetry Writing Month). A poem a day, 30 poems by the end of the month. I've attempted it in past years and usually last til about the middle of the month and then fall so far behind that catching up would be impossible. Like many things other than poetry I am continually thinking up great creative ideas that I have a hard time bringing to fruition, so for the past few months I have been scribbling notes furiously in my notebook, yet most of the poems remain unwritten ever since I finished the other manuscript. Not to mention I still find myself writing poems for that manuscript--ones that somehow NEED to be in there-when really I'd prefer to be working on something entirely new and not beating the same dead horse. There hasn't been any closure, any end point, any clear break like with past books. So maybe I need to work toward that this month. Anyhow, I may change my mind before the week is out, since I have so many other irons in the fire, but perhaps that is precisely the reason I need to do it this year. In past years, while I didn't always end up with a full-service finished peice, usually I ended up with a few promising fragments that were later developed into something whole. If I do it, I will of course post the pieces here at least for a little while (unless they are awful and unsalvageable, then I probably won't..)
