After a few days of heavy fog coming in off the lake, we have stumbled unwittingly into something like spring this week. This means windows are open, the sun is out, and I may even forgo a winter coat for tonight's theater outing. It's Chekhov this time, The Seagull, in a tiny storefront theater up here in the neighborhood. We did get to see a rather amazing production of Hedda Gabler last week, a little Ibsen for our recent string of Strindberg, which felt fitting. The lead actress possessed just the right amount of attraction/repulsion the character really needs. It was something I read in college and grad school, but never saw live. Later this week, we have tickets for Hamilton downtown, which admittedly was a show I was hesitant on for the past decade, not really thinking it'd be that appealing subject-matter wise, but seeing the pro shot version last summer changed my mind completely and now I'm a little obsessed with the soundtrack and listen to it often. Though it will no doubt be a wild ride given the current horrific political environment so afar the country's scrappy and promising beginnings.
In my daily writing exploits, I've been toddering away on the new play. It actually may be a full-length script, which I've been coming up short on in the last two., which measure in the 40-60 minute range. I am trying to get over the fears and anxieties that plague new genre explorations. While I move pretty confidently in poetry realms after decades of doing it, drama still is very unfamiliar territory (the writing of it anyway,) even more so than fiction. Poetry, on the other hand, has bought some recent good news in terms of journal publications (with work forthcoming over the next couple months in The Account and Copper Nickel.) I am also getting ready to round up the next book, which I've been giving sneak peaks of the cover design and really just need to get finalized so I can polish the galleys this summer. I will also be starting work my next Greek myth/ female epic project, which I will discuss more soon. Also, ironing out printing logistics for the book-object print edition for Patreon of The Abattoir Letters (from which the collage above is taken. ).
In press/shop news, the new layout procedures have commenced with the POD books, and so far the results are going swimmingly despite the design learning curve. I will be placing the order for the first batch as soon as I tweak a couple rough spots I found in the proof. I am also trying to figure out the best schedules and workflows since the galley to production workflows are changing. I am also finishing up my first read-throughs of the ecogothic anthology subs this week and will be sending out responses soon.
